When he was 15, he spent a lot of his time making portraits of his parents and friends. These were later placed in the museum of Pasteur Institute in Paris. In 1840, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1842, he received his Bachelor of Science degree at the Ecole Normale Superieure. After serving as a professor of physics at Dijon Lycee in 1848, he became professor of chemistry at the University of Strasbourg. While there, he met Marie Laurent, who he eventually married on May 29, 1849.
